The weekly quiz was not answered correctly. Here is the question again: How have athletic shoes been used in charting ocean currents? The answer is rather simple. Back in 1990 a Korean container ship bound for the United States ran into some very rough seas. As a result 80,000 pairs of Nike shoes were swept overboard. Oceanographers have since been retrieving the shoes on beaches from Alaska to Oregon to Hawaii. The shoes turned out to make nice “tracers,” which allow validation of computer models of the ocean currents. The atmosphere is greatly affected by the underlying oceans. Computer models of water and climate processes are now beginning to link both the sea and air as one system. Next week’s quiz starts on Monday.
