Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is a “Roll Cloud?” Here is the correct answer. A  Roll Cloud is a low, horizontal tube-shaped arcus cloud associated with a thunderstorm gust front (or sometimes with a cold front). Roll clouds are relatively rare; they are completely detached from the thunderstorm base or other cloud features, thus differentiating them from the more familiar shelf clouds. Roll clouds usually appear to be “rolling” about a horizontal axis, but should not be confused with funnel clouds. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Another upper level high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) dried us out today. Friday shows a weak frontal system moving through the Pacific Northwest bringing just slight chances of showers. It looks like high pressure strengthens again for more sunshine through the weekend. Next Tuesday another frontal system brings back at least a slight chance of showers at night. Looking even farther out a frontal system (shown way out to the northwest) will be heading our way.

Another upper level high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) has cleared the skies for a while. A frontal system approaching the West Coast will weaken but still bring us a chance of rain by tonight.  Friday shows a frontal system moving through the Pacific Northwest bringing more shower chances. By the end of the weekend another frontal system will be approaching from the northwest probably making landfall sometime late Sunday or Monday.
