Tuesday was quite a day with showers and even a rumble or two of thunder. Eugene’s high of 61 was 11 degrees cooler than normal and the Weather Service reported .27″ of rain. I had .17″ in my gauge. Today will start off with a slight chance of showers and then a little break with a mix of clouds and sun in the afternoon and a high of 65. There will be a slight chance of showers at night then morning sun followed by afternoon clouds and a chance of showers. The chance of rain or showers will continue into early next week because of the position of that upper level low. Another Cold Front will be moving through the state between Friday and Saturday.

Here is another chance to answer my weekly weather question. What nation in the world is said to have the worst weather on planet Earth? Please place your answer  as a comment. The first person to answer correctly wins one week of personalized weather forecasts. Good luck. Check the comments to see if someone else answers first.

An upper level low pressure trough (shaded area) is set up along the Oregon shoreline giving us the perfect setup for precipitation. This animation shows the first Cold Front to move through Oregon introducing the beginning of the rain season. Look for showers and maybe even an afternoon thunderstorm today with the high temperature struggling to get past 60 degrees. The precipitation chance will drop to 20%, just a slight chance, Wednesday and Thursday slowly warming to the mid 60s. There will be a 50% chance of rain Friday then down to a 40% chance over the weekend.

Here is my weekly weather question again. What nation in the world is said to have the worst weather on planet Earth? Please place your answer  as a comment. The first person to answer correctly wins one week of personalized weather forecasts. Good luck.

A Trough of Low Pressure (shaded area offshore) is headed our way and it will dramatically change our weather. A series of frontal systems will bring clouds, much cooler temperatures and rain to Western Oregon. I hope you had the chance to enjoy the mild weekend weather because that changes today. We’ll only see upper 60s for high temperatures with the chance of rain increasing throughout the day. Rain and even cooler for your Tuesday with the high near 60. Look for some sun after morning clouds and a slight chance of showers Wednesday as temperatures get into the mid 60s. The chance of showers returns late in the week and will last through next weekend.

Here’s my weather quiz for this week.  What nation in the world is said to have the worst weather on planet Earth? Please place your answer  as a comment. The first person to answer correctly wins one week of personalized weather forecasts. Good luck.

The weather this weekend will be typical for this time of the year, just a little warmer than normal, so enjoy it as best you can because the change next week will be a shock. We’ll see clouds and sun today warming up to 82. A great day for football! Sunday a bit more sunshine and a pleasant 84 or your high. A strong Cold front will bring rain back and we’ll be lucky if we reach 70 for the high on Monday. Remember, this time of the year we usually get on a wavy pattern warming, then cooling with rain, then warming and drying again.

My weekly weather question turned out to be a tough one. Lightning can occur without a thunderstorm. There are a couple of other ways lightning can be generated, what are they?  On a few occasions lightning has been observed within giant steam and debris clouds from erupting volcanoes. Lightning and miniature tornado-like vortices were observed during the spectacular volcanic birth of the island Surtsey near Iceland. The same kind of lightning event occurred above Mt. St. Helens during its major eruotions in the early 1980’s. Giant plumes of smoke from large forest fires also have been known to produce lightning, although these smoke clouds were probably in the process of turning into regular thunderstorms. In the western U.S. most forest fires are started by lightning. Sometimes the heat from the intense fires trigger new thunderstorms, which in turn produce more lightning. This is called a feedback loop.

The next weekly quiz starts on Monday. Please give it a try.

The winds turned from the Northwest and pushed the smoke out of the Southern Willamette Valley Thursday. Nice to be able to breathe outside again. The Upper level High Pressure ridge is rebuilding and that means sunshine and a nice warmer day today, high 82 after some patchy AM fog. With the offshore increasing the smoke will head our way again. Sunshine after AM fog again on Saturday warming to 84. Sunny and even warmer Sunday high 87. Look for a big change in the weather Monday as a Cold front brings more clouds, much cooler temperatures (60s), and the chance of rain back to western Oregon.

Here’s your last chance this week to answer my quiz. Lightning can occur without a thunderstorm. There are a couple of other ways lightning can be generated, what are they? The weather will slowly get back to at least closer to normal conditions as the center of High Pressure moves to the East. The airflow will turn more onshore and that should help clean the air of the smoke that has been settling in the valley for the last couple of days. A weak Cold Front is moving through the state mainly to our North. It will bring high temperatures back to normal today as the high temperature will reach only about 74. The ridge strengthens a bit on Friday and we’ll warm to about 80 and stay there through the weekend.  Let’s just say most everyone will like the weather for the next few days except for those looking for rain.

Don’t forget to try your hand at this week’s weather quiz. Lightning can occur without a thunderstorm. There are a couple of other ways lightning can be generated, what are they? Please give your answer as a comment. The first person to answer the question correctly wins a week of free personalized weather forecasts to suit your needs. Good luck.

The first day of Autumn was not quite as warm as I predicted, but I wasn’t looking for record-breaking heat like the other forecasters. I must admit we did get more smoke in the Souther Willamette Valley from the Tumble Bug Complex fire near Oakridge than we could have expected. That layer of smoke filtered out enough of the sun’s radiation that the high in Eugene only made it to 89 instead of the 94 I predicted. Others were pushing for 96 and a new record high. Roseburg was the warmest in the state at 101 and that is a new record for the date. Today should be a lot like Tuesday in the Southern Valley as more smoke will hang around. The only way the temperature will go above the high 80s is if the winds shift to onshore. That could send the smoke to the East away from us. It will cool down a bit Thursday only the upper 70s then stay in the low to mid 80s through the weekend.

Still plenty of time to win my weekly quiz. Lightning can occur without a thunderstorm. There are a couple of other ways lightning can be generated, what are they? Please give your answer as a comment. The first person to answer the question correctly wins a week of free personalized weather forecasts to suit your needs. Good luck.

It’s going to feel like the “Dog Days”  of August instead of late September. Today should be the hottest day and sunny with a high of about 94. Look for more sunshine for your Wednesday and slightly cooler with a high near 90. A large High Pressure ridge will keep us well above normal with with highs in the 80s for the rest of the week into the weekend.

Here again is this week’s question: Lightning can occur without a thunderstorm. There are a couple of other ways lightning can be generated, what are they? Please give your answer as a comment. The first person to answer the question correctly wins a week of free personalized weather forecasts to suit your needs. Good luck.

Alton Baker Park was the site of the annual “Sole Support Walk for Parkinson’s” yesterday and I was thrilled to be the event’s Master of Ceremonies again this year. A lot of walkers showed up many of whom had their own team T-shirts. Here are some pictures I took with my iPhone.
