The weekend turned out pretty well with valley highs near 80 and the coast in the mid 60s. The first half of this week will see sunshine after AM fog or low clouds. Highs will be near 80 again for the valleys, but it will cool off by the the we get to the end of the week because we’ll see more clouds and a chance of showers. Next weekend is the Labor Day Holiday weekend and I’m afraid it will be cool with lots of clouds and a chance of some showers. Not the best weather for the unofficial last big outdoor weekend of the summer.

It’s time for the weather quiz for this week. We’ve all heard of noise pollution and we usually blame large cities for causing it. What was the loudest noise in recorded history? You have the rest of the week to come up with the answer. Please leave your answer as a comment. The first person to correctly answer the question will receive one week of free personalized weather forecasts suited to your needs. Also, you can only win once per year. Good luck.

We didn’t see much rain today. The airport got .06″ and I had .02″ of rain in my rain gauge. Today was a lot cooler only getting to 73. Saturday will begin to warm up and by Sunday we should be back to normal, the low to mid 80s.

Sorry no winner in this weeks quiz. The question was: In the 1996 movie “Twister” a device called “Dorothy” was used to study how tornadoes function. There was a real device used in early tornado research. What was it called?

Here is the answer: In the movie “Twister,” the chasers are trying to deploy something called “Dorothy” that consists of a large number of instrument packages inside plastic “bubbles” that will send data about the tornado back to the chasers. The container holding these sensors looks to be modeled after a real instrument package called “TOTO” (for TOtable Tornado Observatory) that was developed by Dr. Al Bedard of ERL in Boulder. The idea was for a chaser to put TOTO down in the path of a tornado so that data from the passage of the tornado would be recorded on magnetic tape. TOTO was roughly the size of a 55 gallon oil drum and was designed to stay put (hopefully) during the passage of a tornado. For a number of years, it was carried about during storm chases by Prof. Howard Bluestein of the School of Meteorology, University of Oklahoma. Then, TOTO was given to NSSL to attempt deployment. All these efforts were essentially unsuccessful because it is difficult to put objects in the path of a tornado! Only once was TOTO put nearly into the tornado path; that particular chase effort is “immortalized” by the PBS “NOVA” program on tornadoes that aired first in 1986.

There will be another quiz next week starting Monday. Good Luck.

Skies will be mostly cloudy today and it will be much cooler with a chance of showers today and a slight chance late tonight. Temperatures will only reach the mid to upper 70s instead of the 90s like Thursday. An upper level low will help push a weak cold front eastward through Oregon bringing the cooler temperatures and possible precipitation. We are below normal for rainfall and could really use the moisture, but don’t look for much accumulation. The morning clouds will linger Saturday so it won’t warm up very much, just near 80 degrees. Sunday will see lots of sunshine and warmer temperatures in the low to mid 80s.

Wednesday was warmer than Tuesday by more than 10 degrees. Eugene reached a high of 89 and Roseburg got to 95. Today will be just a touch warmer than Wednesday. A trough of Low Pressure along with a week cold front, most of which will pass north of us, will bring a chance of some sprinkles to the area Thursday night & Friday at the coast and Friday morning and afternoon in the Willamette Valley. Valley temperatures will cool to the mid 70s for Friday. The weekend will heat up back to the low and mid 80s.

Your Wednesday will see some patchy AM fog or low clouds, then a serious warm-up with high temperatures in the upper 80s in the valleys then near 90 or so on Thursday, a bit warmer in the Umpqua basin. There will be another cool-down for your Friday with the passage of another cold front as temperatures struggle to get into the low 80s. As usual at the coast highs will be in the mid to upper 60s. The weekend will be great with sunshine and high temperatures in the mid 80s.

Look for temperatures to cool off a bit today (upper 70s) as an upper level trough of low pressure and a weak surface front bring some more clouds and marine air our way. You can see the trough of Low Pressure , the “u” shape north of Washington, that will increase the southwesterly flow of cooler moist air that will cool us back into the 70s today. That helps push the weak cold front through. Behind the front it will warm back up to normal temperatures for the Willamette Valley in the low to mid 80s by Wednesday, warmer 90 to low 90s in the Umpqua Basin. The coast will see low clouds or fog late night and early morning with a slight chance of sprinkles today with highs in the mid 60s.

After a weekend that was cooler than normal we are starting the week off with morning clouds and then mostly sunny skies and warmer. High today will be in the low to mid 80s in the Willamette Valley and the mid 80s in the Umpqua Basin. That trough of Low Pressure that was  over us will continue to move eastward across the state being replaced by high pressure. A weak cold front will brush through to our North, it should remain dry despite our need for rain currently increasing. There will be at least a slight chance of sprinkles along the North Coast for Tuesday. Don’t  forget my weekly weather quiz. Here’s this week’s question.

The marine air got to the valleys faster than I expected, but I don’t hear anybody complaining. High in Eugene Thursday could only get up to 81 which is 20 degrees cooler that it was on Wednesday. Roseburg’s high of 87 was 18 degrees cooler. It’s going to feel really comfortable through the weekend with normal temperatures, around 80 in the valleys,  over the state all due to a trough of Low Pressure, the shaded area offshore. Great weather for the last days of the Lane County Fair. Look for highs in the low 80s most of next week.

Wednesday was a special day, weather-wise at least. Eugene reached 101 which breaks the old record of 100 set  in 1939. Roseburg set a record of 105 beating the old record of  101 in 1939. There will be a cooling trend as a trough of Low Pressure, the shaded area offshore, brings the cooler marine air our way. Your Thursday will see high temperatures near 90 in the valleys and cool 60s at the coast. A frontal system will move through Friday keeping our temperatures at about average levels.Picture 10 See map below.

Enjoy the cooler weather, especially those without air conditioning, that includes me.

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for the valleys until 10 PM tonight. If you thought it was hot Tuesday today will be even hotter. A sprawling High Pressure Ridge (the yellow wave above the Pacific Northwest) will keep the airflow offshore and hot for at least another day. Tuesday’s high temperature in Eugene was not a record, but close at 97 and the record is 98.Roseburg’s 100 broke the record by one degree. Tomorrow both locations could see record highs into the triple digits.Eugene should at least get to 99 and Roseburg should break that 100 degree mark. The coast will be in the mid 60s while Florence, inland by about 2.5 miles will warm into the mid 70s after a high Tuesday of 72. Remember to keep as cool as possible, drink plenty of fluids, make sure outdoor pets have water and a shady spot, and don’t under any circumstances leave a child or pet in a vehicle unattended. There will be slow cooling beginning Thursday.
