Here is my weekly weather quiz question. The city of San Francisco, CA has it’s own “air conditioner” caused by upwelling. What is “upwelling” and how does it keep the area cool? Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

ADVISORIES:

A Blue-Green Algae warning continues for Tenmile Lakes in Coos County, Fern Ridge Reservoir, Lost Creek Lake,  and  at Devils Lake. Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins, state public health officials said. The algae levels are likely associated with dangerous cyanotoxin concentrations in the water that can be harmful to humans and animals. Swallowing or inhaling water droplets, as well as skin contact with water, should be avoided according to the authorities.
________________

An upper level high pressure ridge (shaded “Arch” shape) moves in bringing colder air and clear skies. A weak frontal system is moving through today and should clear out just in time for Halloween Trick-or-Treaters to move about without getting wet. Don’t forget that this is the weekend when we “Fall Back” and turn our clocks back one hour to return to Standard Time. The official time is 2 AM Sunday, but bedtime Saturday is when most people set their clocks. The local firefighters recommend that you check the batteries in your smoke alarms, Co2 detectors, and Radon gas detectors to make sure they are functioning properly.

ADVISORIES:

  • A FROST ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM TODAY FOR THE NORTH OREGON COAST AND THE CENTRAL OREGON COAST.
  • A FREEZE WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM TODAY FOR THE ENTIRE I-5 CORRIDOR FROM PORTLAND THROUGH EUGENE-SPRINGFIELD.
  • A FROST ADVISORY IN IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM TODAY FOR THE SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON COAST AND CENTRAL DOUGLAS COUNTY.
  • A FREEZE WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM TODAY FOR CENTRAL DOUGLAS COUNTY, EASTERN CURRY COUNTY, JOSEPHINE COUNTY, AND JACKSON COUNTY.

An upper level low (Shaded “U” shape) is sliding through the Pacific Northwest bringing colder air and some blustery conditions along with the chance of rain. Be prepared for the chance of wet weather Thursday so your “Trick-or-Treaters” stay warm and dry.

Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time this week. What is “air stagnation?” Here is the correct answer. Air Stagnation is a meteorological situation in which there is a major buildup of air pollution in the atmosphere. This usually occurs when the same air mass is parked over the same area for several days. During this time, the light winds cannot “cleanse” the buildup of smoke, dust, gases, and other industrial air pollution. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday.

An upper level low (Shaded “U” shape) is sliding through the Pacific Northwest bringing colder air and some blustery conditions along with the chance of rain. Be prepared for the weather Thursday so your “Trick-or-Treaters” stay warm and dry.
