Here is my weekly weather quiz question. What is  “Effective Terrestrial Radiation?” The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

________________

An Upper Level High Pressure Ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with arrows) is developing and will bring more dry weather with sunshine. We are still dryer than normal and below where we were at this time last year. We need rain, but the most we’ll see for the next week or so will be a drop-in-the-bucket compared to what we need. This could be a very bad fire season approaching. The graphics for days 3-7 show the frontal system moving through the Pacific Northwest Saturday night Sunday and a weak disturbance tries to move through between Wednesday and Wednesday night.

ADVISORIES:

  • A FREEZE WARNING IS IN EFFECT FROM 2 AM UNTIL 8 AM FRIDAY FOR THE KLAMATH BASIN, NORTHERN AND EASTERN KLAMATH COUNTY, AND WESTERN LAKE COUNTY.

HEALTH ADVISORIES:

  • A PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR DETROIT LAKE, LOCATED 46 MILES SE OF SALEM. THE LAKE SPANS BOTH LINN AND MARION COUNTIES. WATER MONITORING HAS CONFIRMED THE PRESENCE OF BLUE-GREEN ALGAE AND THE TOXINS THEY PRODUCE IN DETROIT LAKE. PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID SWALLOWING WATER, OR INHALING WATER DROPLETS AS A RESULT OF HIGH-SPEED WATER ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WATER SKIING OR POWER BOATING, IN AREAS WHERE BLOOMS ARE IDENTIFIED. ALSO KEEP PETS AWAY FROM THE WATER.
  • A PERMANENT HEALTH ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER BAR. POOLS IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP BLUE-GREEN ALGAE (CYANOBACTERIAL) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED ALONG SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE  RIVER.

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is an “Easterly Wave?” Here is the correct answer. An Easterly Wave is a low level disturbance of tropical origins. Easterly waves can develop into tropical cyclones. However, tropical cyclone development is not required in order for these systems to produce significant amounts of rainfall. The easterly waves are primarily a summer phenomenon. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday.  The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

Good luck.

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (Shaded “U” shape with arrows) to our south is moving away. The graphics for days 1-3 show the frontal system moving through mainly to our north that brought clouds.. An Upper Level High Pressure Ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with arrows) takes over today through Memorial Day for more sunshine and warming. The graphics for days 3-7 show the next storm systems that will approach and try to move through the Pacific Northwest Monday night through next Saturday.

Note: All-in-all the rest of the Long Memorial Day Holiday weekend looks good.
