Here is my weather quiz question for this week. Since the tropical storm season is about to officially start (this Friday June 1st) and we have already had a tropical disturbance that pushed into northern Florida I thought a hurricane question would be in order. What are the three main things needed to form a tropical storm/hurricane? Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck!

_______________

A high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on orange line) took over drying us out and giving us sunshine that will end Friday with the return of clouds. A weak frontal system brushed north of us and fell apart without causing precipitation in the Southern Willamette Valley, but increasing the cloud cover mainly to our north. Another trough of low pressure will move closer to Oregon and a frontal system (position shown is Sunday) will make landfall late Friday and Friday night returning the chance of showers just in time for the “Prefontaine Classic” (runners like cloudy and cool, but not much wet) on Saturday at Hayward Field. At least a slight chance of precipitation will continue through Sunday into early next week.

It’s a Holiday, but it is still Monday so it’s time for my weather quiz question for this week. Since the tropical storm season is about to start (this Friday June 1st) and we already have a near-hurricane poised to hit northern Florida I thought a hurricane question would be in order. Good luck!

trough of low pressure (“U” shape on the orange line) is moving through keeping the onshore airflow giving us a continued chance of showers. A frontal system fell apart as it moved through Oregon, but a short-lived ridge of high pressure (“Arch” shape on orange line) will take over drying us out Tuesday through Wednesday. A frontal system will make landfall by Thursday bringing back the chance of showers.

Just in case you missed the announcement Monday, we did have someone post the correct answer to my weekly weather quiz question. Here it is again. What does it mean when flocks of seagulls are seen hanging around the parking lots of schools and grocery stores in the Willamette Valley. Rosemary’s answer: ” When the weather is stormy and the surf is rough, the seagulls come inland to get food.”  My detailed answer: The seagulls move inland on the higher winds ahead of a storm moving onshore. With rough seas and strong winds it is easier for the seagulls to fly eastward and stop off at grocery store parking lots and school parking lots where they can find discarded food scraps. I’ll have a new weather quiz question for you next Monday.

An upper air trough of low pressure (“U” shape on the orange line) has increased onshore airflow bringing in more clouds and chances for rain. Another upper level low pressure trough (“U” shape on yellow line) will keep the onshore airflow pushing into Pacific Northwest keeping the chance of showers around. Another frontal system (position shown is for Monday) will approach the coast today into Tuesday, but it looks like it will fall apart and bring a chance of showers to the higher elevations only and mostly cloudy skies with just a slight chance of showers to the valley. Another frontal system will follow close behind. But, if the front has enough upper air support it could increase the chances of showers for everyone. So be prepared just in case the shower threat increases over the weekend. Please be safe. Don’t drink and drive or boat and drive.
