Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. “What is a “Rear Flank Downdraft?” Here is the correct answer. A Rear Flank Downdraft is a region of dry air subsiding on the back side of, and wrapping around, a mesocyclone. It often is visible as a clear slot wrapping around the wall cloud. Scattered large precipitation particles (rain and hail) at the interface between the clear slot and wall cloud may show up on radar as a hook or pendant; thus the presence of a hook or pendant may indicate the presence of an RFD.

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. “What is a “Rear Flank Downdraft?” Here is the correct answer. A Rear Flank Downdraft is a region of dry air subsiding on the back side of, and wrapping around, a mesocyclone. It often is visible as a clear slot wrapping around the wall cloud. Scattered large precipitation particles (rain and hail) at the interface between the clear slot and wall cloud may show up on radar as a hook or pendant; thus the presence of a hook or pendant may indicate the presence of an RFD.

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (“U” shape) sitting right over the Pacific Northwest. The graphics for days 1-3  show a frontal system sliding into the Pacific Northwest today. The graphics for days 3-7    Tuesday through Saturday show the frontal system moving across the Pacific Northwest Tuesday, then another front offshore that pushes in between Thursday and Friday. An Upper Level High Pressure Ridge (“Arch” shape) is weakening and moving eastward away from us to be replaced by an Upper Level Low Pressure Trough.  The graphics for days 1-3  show the front that moved through and the next one right behind it.
