An Air Mass Thunderstorm: Generally, a thunderstorm not associated with a front or other type of synoptic-scale forcing mechanism. Air mass thunderstorms typically are associated with warm, humid air in the summer months; they develop during the afternoon in response to insolation, and dissipate rather quickly after sunset. An approaching Upper Level High Pressure Ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) is pushing a low southward along the coast taking the clouds and rain with it as shown on the days 1-3 graphic. The graphic for days 3-7 shows more frontal systems heading our way that will try to break through blocking surface high pressure Sunday and Tuesday of next week. An Upper Air Low Pressure Trough (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows) pushed another frontal system shown on the days 1-3 graphic into the Pacific Northwest.
