An upper level low (Shaded “U” shape in blue arrows) has taken over control of our weather. A frontal system can be seen moving through the Pacific Northwest by next Wednesday. As much as we need some rain I’m sure most of us are hoping that it is dry and warm and dry for the long Labor day weekend September 3rd through 5th, but it is too soon to make that prediction final. So far it does look like sunshine and warming temperatures for the holiday weekend. The college football season gets under way with the Beavers playing in Minnesota tonight and the Ducks at home Saturday afternoon.

Advisories:

  • *A health advisory has been lifted for the Ross Island Lagoon and the mouth of the lagoon as it connects to the Holgate Channel. Ross Island Lagoon is located about one river mile south of downtown Portland in Multnomah County. Water monitoring has confirmed that the number of blue-green algae cells as well as levels of associated toxins are below guideline values for human exposure.
  • A health advisory remains in effect for water contact at Nye Beach located in Lincoln County due to higher than normal levels of fecal bacteria. Contact with the water can result in diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses.Direct contact with the water should be avoided in this area until the advisory is lifted, especially by children and the elderly who may be more vulnerable to waterborne bacteria. Visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks, pools of water on the beach, or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean.
  • A health advisory remains in effect for Agency Lake. Agency Lake is located just north of Upper Klamath Lake near Klamath Falls along Highway 97 in Klamath County. Water monitoring on the lake has confirmed the presence of high levels of blue-green algae and associated toxins that can be harmful to people and animals. Swallowing water while swimming or inhaling water droplets as a result of high-speed water activities, such as water skiing and power boating, should be avoided in areas where blooms are identified. Although toxins are not absorbed through the skin, contact with cells from a bloom can cause skin irritation and a red, puffy rash in individuals with skin sensitivities, or those who develop rashes easily.
  • A Blue-Green Algae health advisory remains in effect for Howard Bay (sometimes called Howards Bay or Howard’s Bay) in Upper Klamath Lake ONLY. People should avoid swallowing water while swimming or inhaling water droplets as a result of high-speed water activities, such as water skiing or power boating, in areas where blooms are identified. Although toxins are not absorbed through the skin, people who have skin sensitivities may experience a puffy, red rash at the affected area.

An upper level low (Shaded “U” shape in blue arrows) has cooled us down with increasing onshore airflow. It will continue to slide to the south then eastward through the Pacific Northwest. The cool-down should last most of the week but the computer models are conflicted over the chances of precipitation. A frontal system is on its way bringing the slight chance of showers by morning. Another frontal system can be seen approaching the Pacific Northwest next between next Tuesday and Wednesday. As much as we need some rain I’m sure most of us are hoping that it is dry and warm for the long Labor day weekend September 3rd through 5th, but it is too soon to make that prediction final. So far it does look like sunshine and warming temperatures for the holiday weekend.

Advisories:

  • A RED FLAG WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM THIS EVENING FOR STRONG GUSTY WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE KLAMATH BASIN AND THE FREMONT-WINEMA NATIONAL FOREST INCLUDING THE BLM LAND IN EASTERN LAKE COUNTY, WESTERN HARNEY COUNTY, THE BURNS BLM, THE VALE BLM AND THE BAKER VALLEY.
  • A health advisory remains in effect for the Ross Island Lagoon and the mouth of the lagoon as it connects to the Holgate Channel. Ross Island Lagoon is located about one river mile south of downtown Portland in Multnomah County. The advisory is being issued due to visual confirmation of a blue-green algae bloom in the lagoon. Oregon Public Health officials advise people to avoid swallowing or inhaling water droplets as a result of swimming or high-speed water activities, such as water skiing and power boating in areas where blooms are identified.

It will continue to slide to the south from off the British Columbia coast and then move eastward. The cool-down should last most of the week but the computer  models are conflicted over the chance of any precipitation. A frontal system will be on its way to us today bringing the slight chance of drizzle at night. By Thursday a frontal system will have passed through the Pacific Northwest continuing the slight chance of showers. As much as we need some rain I’m sure most of us are hoping that it is dry and warm for the long Labor day weekend September 3rd through 5th, but it is too soon to make that prediction.

Advisories:

  • A RED FLAG WARNING IS  IN EFFECT FOR A COMBINATION OF STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY UNTIL 9 PM TONIGHT FOR THE KLAMATH BASIN, THE FREMONT-WINEMA NATIONAL FOREST, AND THE SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON DESERT INCLUDING THE THE BLM LAND IN EASTERN LAKE COUNTY AND WESTERN HARNEY COUNTY.
  • A RED FLAG WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR A COMBINATION OF STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY UNTIL 8 PM TONIGHT FOR THE BLM LAND IN BURNS, VALE AND THE BAKER VALLEY.

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is “Undertow?” Here is the correct answer.Undertow is a relatively small-scale surf-zone current moving away from the beach. Rip currents form as waves disperse along the beach causing water to become trapped between the beach and a sandbar or other underwater feature. The water converges into a narrow, river-like channel moving away from the shore at high speed. I will have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.
