A  high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) continues to be centered over the Pacific Northwest, but it is weakening. An upper level low is moving inland in Southern California and will spin up clouds at us. A frontal system will slide through the Pacific Northwest Friday starting a parade of storms that are headed our way. Another surface frontal system that will slide through by Sunday will increase the clouds and the chance of rain too. More frontal systems will parade through Sunday and Monday. We are finally going to see our first significant rain of the season. Note: Remember that the roadways can get very slippery when we get rain falling on very dry pavement. The rain water brings up the oil that has been deposited on the pavement making a slippery coating until enough rain can wash it away.

A  high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) has moved to the east a bit, but still centered over Oregon, (see blue arrows curving from the northeast) and a thermal trough of low pressure (dashed line along the Oregon coast) our weather pattern will remain stable. We’ll have chilly nights followed by pleasant days with sunshine and average temperatures for today, Columbus Day, and beyond. It’s time to think back and remember the destruction caused by the “Great Columbus Day storm of 1962.” Today is the celebrated day for Columbus Day (now a Monday holiday), but the storm in 1962 actually occurred on October 12th the day historically designated as “Columbus Day.” For more on that storm click here.

Sorry, no winner this week. One person did come close. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is a “lahar.” Here is the correct answer. A lahar is a type of mudflow or debris flow composed of pyroclastic material, rocky debris, and water. The material flows down from a volcano, typically along a river valley. It is very dangerous because it’s consistency and the way it acts is very much like cement. It is liquid when it’s moving, but when it stops, it solidifies. This can cause just as much devastation as lava itself. I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you starting on Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.
