Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. Define “sastrugi.”  Here is the correct answer. Sastrugi are ridges of snow formed on a snow field by the action of the wind. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Advisories:

  • THE OREGON HEALTH AUTHORITY ISSUED HAS LIFTED THE HEALTH ADVISORY FOR SUNSET BAY STATE PARK BEACH. THE ADVISORY WAS ISSUED DUE TO ELEVATED LEVELS OF BACTERIA . WATER SAMPLES INDICATED HIGHER-THAN-NORMAL LEVELS OF FECAL BACTERIA, WHICH CAN RESULT IN DIARRHEA, STOMACH CRAMPS, SKIN RASHES, UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS AND OTHER ILLNESSES. WATER SAMPLES NOW SHOW THE CONTAMINATION HAS SUBSIDED AND THE WATER NO LONGER POSES A HIGHER-THAN-NORMAL RISK ASSOCIATED WITH WATER CONTACT ACTIVITIES.

An upper level high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape with blue arrows offshore) took over to keep us warmer than normal. Now an upper level low (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows of the same graphic) will swing in through California returning the clouds and the chance of showers and at the same time cooling us down. Just in case you didn’t know today June 1st begins the Atlantic/Caribbean tropical cyclone season.
