An upper level Low (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows on previous graphic) starts moving toward us and that means a change in our weather. A surface frontal system moves through the Pacific Northwest between Wednesday and Thursday enhancing the chance of showers. The Summer Solstice occurred today at 3:34 PM PDT. That is the official beginning of Summer and the Full Strawberry moon will be out too tonight.

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is “Shear?” Here is the correct answer. Shear is variation in wind speed (speed shear) and/or direction (directional shear) over a short distance within the atmosphere. Shear usually refers to vertical wind shear, i.e., the change in wind with height, but the term also is used in Doppler radar to describe changes in radial velocity over short horizontal distances. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

An upper level low pressure trough will slowly move to the east away from us, but in the meantime look for the chance of showers to remain with us today. High pressure (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows on previous graphic) will move in and dry us out with plenty of sunshine Sunday into next week. Our next potentially weather-changing weak surface frontal system should move through the Pacific Northwest by Thursday. The Summer Solstice occurs this Monday June 20th at 3:34 PM PDT. That is the official beginning of Summer and the Full Strawberry moon will be out too.
