Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is an “Accessory Cloud?” Here is the correct answer. An Accessory Cloud is a cloud which is dependent on a larger cloud system for development and continuance. Roll clouds, shelf clouds, and wall clouds are examples of accessory clouds. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer at the bottom of this page. An email will not suffice. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs.  Good luck.

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows)continues to bring westerly airflow our way. That means a continuation of  the Pacific Ocean moisture feed to the Pacific Northwest. Short-lived High Pressure drys us out midweek, but you can see on days 3 through 7 frontal activity returns by Friday.

Advisories:

  • A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM MONDAY FOR THE SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON CASCADES, THE SOUTHERN OREGON CASCADES, AND THE SISKIYOU MOUNTAINS.
  • A WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM TONIGHT FOR NORTHERN AND EASTERN KLAMATH COUNTY, AND WESTERN, CENTRAL AND EASTERN LAKE COUNTY.
  • A FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT FOR THE CURRY COUNTY COAST.
  • A Blue-green Algae Health Advisory has been issued for Howard Bay located in Upper Klamath Lake. Water monitoring on the lake has confirmed the presence of high levels of blue-green algae and associated toxins that can be harmful to people and animals. Swallowing water while swimming or inhaling water droplets as a result of high-speed water activities, such as water skiing and power boating, should be avoided in areas where blooms are identified. Although toxins are not absorbed through the skin, contact with cells from a bloom can cause skin irritation and a red, puffy rash in individuals with skin sensitivities, or those who develop rashes easily. Cell counts in other parts of the lake were low.
  • A Permanent Health Advisory is in effect for the South Umpqua River and Lawson Bar. Pools in the bedrock along the rivers edge are known to develop Blue-green Algae (cyanobacterial) blooms that can be harmful to pets and people if accidental ingestion occurs. Signs have been posted along several access areas along the river.
  • A Blue-Green Algae Health Advisory remains in effect for Agency Lake. Agency Lake is located just north of Upper Klamath Lake near Klamath Falls along Highway 97 in Klamath County.

We expected some afternoon sun Monday, but I didn’t see any. It stayed overcast all day at least in South Eugene. Clouds like to get stuck in the southern end of the Willamette Valley particularly this time of the year. We did manage some afternoon sunshine today.  An upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows) moves to the east to allow clearing again because of a ridge of high pressure (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows). That means we’ll warm up a bit also. An upper level low pressure trough (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows on previous graphic) will take over Thursday bringing a series of frontal systems. You’ll see days 3-7 show a frontal series of frontal systems moving through about every other day.

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is “Acid Precipitation?” Here is the correct answer. Acid Precipitation is precipitation, such as rain, snow or sleet, containing relatively high concentrations of acid-forming chemicals that have been released into the atmosphere and combined with water vapor; harmful to the environment. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

We expected some afternoon sun Monday, but I didn’t see any. It stayed overcast all day at least in South Eugene. An upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows) moves to the east to allow clearing again because of a ridge of high pressure (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows). That means we’ll warm up a bit also. You’ll see days 3-7 show a frontal system moving toward us Friday through Monday.

Advisories:

  • A HIGH WIND WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING FOR THE KLAMATH BASIN,  EASTERN KLAMATH COUNTY, AND WESTERN, CENTRAL AND EASTERN LAKE COUNTY, NORTHERN, CENTRAL LAKE COUNTY.
  • A HIGH WIND WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING FOR THE SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON COAST AND THE CURRY COUNTY COAST.
  • A FREEZE WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM WEDNESDAY FOR THE GRANDE RONDE VALLEY, THE JOHN DAY BASIN AND CENTRAL OREGON.
