Short-lived high pressure is being replaced by an upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows) returning the clouds and precipitation. The days 1-3 graphic shows the next frontal system headed our way Thursday (day 2). The graphic for days 3-7 shows a frontal system approaching the Pacific Northwest next Tuesday. For mountain snow conditions at the local ski areas check out their websites or give them a call.

Note: Many people always ask me if there is a chance of the Eugene-Springfield area having a “White Christmas.” I checked with  the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Portland to confirm a statistic I remember from back in the days when we had a local weather service office at the Eugene Airport. Clinton Rockey, their climatology expert, says that we have no more than a 2% chance of having a White Christmas. That is calculated from the historical climate data going back to when the local office first opened. Don’t worry Santa doesn’t need snow to deliver the presents.

An upper level high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) is being replaced by an upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows). That will warm us up and bring more rain. The days 1-3 graphic shows the warmer air and moisture headed out way with a frontal system today. The cold weather precipitation, meaning snow, will stay in the mountains for the time being. As long as we don’t see sub freezing temperatures or higher winds for a while the trees should stop falling, at least temporarily. The graphic for days 3-7 shows the next storms headed our way Friday into Saturday (storm center to our South) and again along the coast on Monday. Another frontal system will approach the Pacific Northwest next Tuesday night into Wednesday. For mountain snow conditions at the local ski areas check out their websites or give them a call.

Note: Just in case you haven’t noticed “THIS ISN”T WINTER YET!” The Winter Solstice is this Thursday December 22nd at 2:44 AM PST. I hope this current weather pattern isn’t the precursor to a very active Winter Storm season.

An upper level high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) is being replaced by an upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows). That will warm us up and bring rain. The days 1-3 graphic shows the warmer air and moisture headed out way with a frontal system Tuesday. The cold weather precipitation, meaning snow, will stay in the mountains for the time being. As long as we don’t see sub freezing temperatures or higher winds for a while the trees should stop falling, at least temporarily. The graphic for days 3-7 shows the next storms headed our way Thursday and again on Sunday.

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is an“Acre-foot?” Here is the correct answer. An Acre-foot is the amount of water required to cover one acre to a depth of one foot. An acre-foot equals 326,851 gallons, or 43,560 cubic feet. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer at the bottom of this page. An email will not suffice. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs.  Good luck.

An upper level high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) will be sending us airflow from the Northwest then another upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows) moves in behind it. The days 1-3 graphic shows the storm that moisture will still be moving over us with some warmer air. A lot of the ice melted Saturday, but cold overnight temperatures could freeze what is still wet this morning. The combination of the branches rising with melting and being refrozen could result in more trees and branches  falling. The graphic for days 3-7 shows the next storms headed our way Tuesday and Thursday. For mountain snow conditions at the local ski areas check out their websites or give them a call.

Note: Just in case you haven’t noticed “THIS ISN”T WINTER YET!” The Winter Solstice falls on Thursday December 22nd at 2:44 AM PST. I hope this current weather pattern isn’t the precursor to a very active Winter Storm season.

An upper air low pressure trough (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows is still in control of our weather, But a high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) will fall in behind returning the much missed sunshine for a while. The days 1-3 graphic shows the storm that brought all of the moisture to mix with cold air to produce the icy weather over all of our area has moved away. With overnight and early AM temperatures remaining well below freezing, I’m afraid more trees and branches will most likely fall. The graphic for days 3-7 shows the next storm headed our way Tuesday and another one moving toward us next Thursday. For mountain snow conditions at the local ski areas check out their websites or give them a call. With the potential of significant snowfall and mixed precipitation you’d be wise to judge carefully when and if you need to drive during the next 12 hours or so of this storm.
