Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is the “ Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS)?” Here is the correct answer. Automated Surface Observing System, the ASOS program is a joint effort of the National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Department of Defense (DOD). Completed in the mid-1990s, the ASOS systems serve as the nation’s primary surface weather observing network. ASOS is designed to support weather forecast activities and aviation operations and, at the same time, support the needs of the meteorological, hydrological, and climatological research communities. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you Monday.  The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs.  Good luck.
