Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What are “Detention Basins?”  And no, this has nothing to do with staying after school. Here is the correct answer. Detention Basins are structures built upstream from populated areas to prevent runoff and/or debris flows from causing property damage and loss of life. They are normally dry, but are designed to attenuate storm flows or detain mud/debris during and immediately after a runoff event. They have no spillway gates or valves and do not store water on a long-term basis. Typical detention times for storm flows are on the order of 24 to 72 hours, but may be as long as 5 to 10 days. An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (Shaded “U” shape with arrows) moves in sending moisture filled storms out way starting Tuesday. The graphics for days 1-3 show that frontal system headed our way Tuesday. The graphics for days 3-7 show the next frontal systems that will be moving through the Pacific Northwest Thursday through next Sunday.

Note: Willamette Pass Ski is closed for the season due to a lack of snow, but Hoodoo is open Thursday through Sunday from 9 AM- 4 PM or 9 PM. Mt. Ashland is open and reports all lifts are operating. They will also be open 9 AM until 4 pm March 24th through April 1st for Spring break. Check their websites for details on days of operation and ski conditions.

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough moves in returning the showers chances. The graphics for days 1-3 show what looks to be a strong storm system moving through the Pacific Northwest today producing wind and rain. Note: Willamette Pass Ski is closed for the season due to a lack of snow, but Hoodoo is open Thursday through Sunday from 9 AM- 4 PM or 9 PM. Mt. Ashland is open and reports all lifts are operating. They will also be open 9 AM until 4 pm March 24th through April 1st for Spring break. Check their websites for details on days of operation and ski conditions.
