The jet stream is setting up to bring the air to us from the Northwest (Gulf of Alaska) as you can see with the shaded area and the blue arrows. That will change us from the warmer than normal Spring-like weather back to a more late winter pattern with falling snow levels. The next cold front is already offshore. Behind it is much colder aloft that will also sweep in along the surface. Another frontal system will approach the coast Monday night and Tuesday. This will be good for skiers and won’t last too long to hamper gardeners for too long.

A high pressure ridge has moved in just a bit earlier than I expected while the latest storm system sags southward into California taking the chance of precipitation with it. The next cold front will bring the rain back by Sunday. That means dry and pleasant today which will be great for any outdoor activity you may have planned even hitting the slopes. Next week has the potential of seeing a parade of storms move through Oregon from the northwest.

We have a winner! The question was: When were clouds first classified and who was responsible for naming them? April Merrill is the first person to post the correct answer “Luke Howard.”  He was a 19th century apothecary who addressed the Askesian Society in London, England (at their meeting in the winter of 1802-1803) with his proposal to classify the various cloud forms into a rational system with suitable names to facilitate their observation and understanding. French naturalist Jean Lamarck had introduced a cloud typing scheme in 1802, but it was not widely accepted. You can check out her winning post. It follows Thursday evening’s forecast. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you next Monday.

The high pressure ridge that gave us the sunshine has moved eastward to be replaced by a trough of low pressure and that will be replaced by another high pressure ridge.  The result will be sunshine that won’t last very long, but first another frontal system, still over the Pacific, will be bringing back the rain for Friday, though most of it will move into Southern California.  Yet another storm system will move in Sunday bringing with it more rainy days that will continue next week.
