It’s Monday and that means it’s time for another of my weekly weather quiz questions. Here is the question. What is needed in the stratosphere, but is considered a dangerous pollutant in the lower atmosphere near the earth’s surface? Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Upper level low pressure (“U” shape on the yellow line) has taken over from the high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on the yellow line) that is moving away from us and a series of surface storms starting with this frontal system (shown still offshore) will march through. Another frontal system later in the week, just one of many, will keep us in a wet weather pattern. Mt Ashland has reopened for the season. Hoodoo says they will be open now through Saturday December 31st. Still not enough snow yet for Willamette Pass to open for skiing. Please check their web sites for details and updates.

Sorry, no winner for my weather quiz question this week.

_________________

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. How did George Washington use his weather knowledge to escape when the British apparently had his army trapped on January 2, 1777? Here is the answer. Washington was hemmed in with mud behind him, an icy river on the other side, and the British on the third side. His weather knowledge saved Washington and his troops because he knew there was a northwest wind blowing and it would bring a freeze. He started to retreat at midnight after the mud had frozen and they were able to make an end run around the British and back up to Princeton. I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you next Monday.
