Here is my new weekly weather quiz question. We have had rain and snow but let’s focus on total precipitation which includes rain and melted snow or other frozen precipitation. What US city has the highest normal annual precipitation in inches? Extra credit if you get the right total too. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Be careful driving during winter storms. Make sure you at least carry chains if you will be driving in the foothills or mountains and be aware that there could be some slippery conditions as far down as the valley floor. You need extra stopping distance when the roadway is slippery. Remember that bridges and overpasses cool down faster than the regular roadway which means that snow could pile up faster and conditions can get icy quicker than on the streets.

It will turn back to just rain by Wednesday except for the mountains. Mt. Ashland is closed due to poor snow conditions. Hoodoo is open (as usual closed Wednesdays). Here is this week’s weather quiz question for the last time. Who was the first scientist to use the term “greenhouse effect” to describe how the Earth is able to keep warm? Here is the answer. The Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius reportedly was the first scientist to use the term “greenhouse effect.” He used it in an article describing how carbon dioxide in the air keeps the Earth warmer than it would otherwise be. His article helped solve the scientific mystery of why the earth is warm enough to sustain life. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday.

Mt. Ashland is closed now due to poor snow conditions. Hoodoo is open (as usual closed Wednesdays). Advisories:  AN AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM SATURDAY FOR CENTRAL DOUGLAS COUNTY, EASTERN CURRY COUNTY, JOSEPHINE COUNTY, AND JACKSON COUNTY.

An upper level high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on the yellow line) will take control over the Pacific Northwest through the rest of the week. An upper level low pressure trough (“U” shape on yellow line) will take over  by sending a frontal system to Oregon bringing the chances of rain back for at least part of the weekend as the rain should return Saturday night into Sunday with another wave possible on Monday. The snow levels will come down low enough to increase the possibility of some serious mountain snow, but it doesn’t look like it will be enough to help the skiing operations. So far at least, the snow should stay away from the valley floor. Mt. Ashland is closed now due to poor snow conditions. Hoodoo is officially open (as usual closed Wednesdays). Willamette Pass will be open on a limited basis for the upcoming weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please check their web sites for the latest details and updates.
