Here is my new weekly weather quiz question. When tornadoes strike they have very strong winds. It is not possible to actually measure the winds created by tornadoes, so Dr. T. Ted Fujita created a scale of wind speeds based on the damage caused by the tornado. As of 2007  his designations have been changed. For example a tornado was listed as an F4 and now might be designated as an EF4. What does the “E” stand for and what does it mean? Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

_______________

Summer officially began with the Summer Solstice today at 4:09 PM PDT. An upper level low (“U” shape on orange line) brought some moisture our way and produced a few showers.  Weak high pressure (little “Arch” shape on orange line on last graphic) will keep us dry for tonight and again tomorrow. A frontal system will slide  through Thursday (position shown is for Friday) and an upper level low will move in behind the ridge both of which will return the slight chance of showers by late Thursday night and another frontal system (the one shown offshore) will follow just as the Olympic Trials open and continue into the weekend and middle of next week. The weather isn’t the only thing that will be a challenge to the athletes. The pollen count will stay high enough to bother those athletes who are allergic. So far, at least, we don’t have smoke from wildfires or grass field burning as we did during the previous Olympic Trials held here.

high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on orange line) has  moved past us now. A weak frontal system slid by bringing more clouds and just the slightest chance of showers Sunday night and a better chance of rain today as an upper level low (“U” shape on orange line) moves in. Summer officially begins with the Summer Solstice at 4:09 PM PDT Wednesday June 20th. It looks like a closed (not in the main jet stream circulation) upper level low will move closer to Oregon bringing clouds and a slight chance of showers ahead of it and pushing a frontal system through Thursday continuing the chance of showers even into the weekend and the Olympic Trials.

high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on orange line) has  moved past us now. A weak frontal system slid by bringing more clouds and just the slightest chance of showers Sunday night and a better chance of rain today as an upper level low (“U” shape on orange line) moves in. Summer is almost here! It officially begins with the Summer Solstice at 4:09 PM PDT Wednesday June 20th. It looks like a closed (not in the main jet stream circulation) upper level low will move closer to Oregon bringing clouds and a slight chance of showers ahead of it and pushing a frontal system through between Friday night and Saturday AM continuing the chance of showers for the weekend and the Olympic Trials.

No winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time this week. What is an “Alberta Clipper?” Here is the answer. An Alberta clipper (also known as a Canadian Clipper) is a fast moving low pressure area (with a warm front moving ahead of it and a cold front pushing colder air in behind it) which generally affects the central provincesof Canada and parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States. Most clippers occur between December and February, but can also occur occasionally in the month of November. Alberta clippers take their name from Alberta, Canada, the province from which they appear to descend, and from clipper ships of the 19th century, one of the fastest ships of that time. I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday.
