Here is my new weekly weather quiz question. When tornadoes strike they have very strong winds. It is not possible to actually measure the winds created by tornadoes, so Dr. T. Ted Fujita created a scale of wind speeds based on the damage caused by the tornado. As of 2007 his designations have been changed. For example a tornado was listed as an F4 and now might be designated as an EF4. What does the “E” stand for and what does it mean? Summer officially began with the Summer Solstice today at 4:09 PM PDT. An upper level low (“U” shape on orange line) brought some moisture our way and produced a few showers. Weak high pressure (little “Arch” shape on orange line on last graphic) will keep us dry for tonight and again tomorrow. A frontal system will slide through Thursday (position shown is for Friday) and an upper level low will move in behind the ridge both of which will return the slight chance of showers by late Thursday night and another frontal system (the one shown offshore) will follow just as the Olympic Trials open and continue into the weekend and middle of next week. The weather isn’t the only thing that will be a challenge to the athletes. The pollen count will stay high enough to bother those athletes who are allergic. So far, at least, we don’t have smoke from wildfires or grass field burning as we did during the previous Olympic Trials held here.
