Congratulations to Dave Haverstock who is the first person to post the correct answer to this week’s weather quiz question. Here is my new weekly weather quiz question for the last time. In meteorology what does the acronym “AFOS” stand for? Here is Dave’s correct answer: “AFOS- the Automation of Field Operations and Services; AFOS is the computer system that links National Weather Service offices and other computer networks, such as the NOAA weather wire, to transmit weather information.” I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

A upper level trough of low pressure has moved in offshore and is changing the airflow to southwest. A frontal system will be pushed by the upper air winds through the Pacific Northwest today. A ridge will take over Thursday and fade Friday. This frontal system will move in late in the week increasing the chance of rain once again into the weekend. For skiers Mt. Ashland and Hoodoo are open and Willamette Pass is still waiting for more snow before they can open.

No winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is a “Wasatch Wind?” Here is the correct answer. A “Wasatch Wind” is a strong easterly wind blowing out of the mouths of the canyons of the Wasatch Mountains onto the plains of Utah. It is also called a canyon wind. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday.

The  upper air flow is moving from the northwest as a high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch shape”) has formed over the Gulf of Alaska. A warm front (see red line with semicircle on it) that is shown well offshore will move in and fall apart Sunday. The next frontal system (cold front) will move in early next week increasing the chance of rain again. For skiers Mt. Ashland and Hoodoo are open and Willamette Pass is still waiting for quite a bit more snow before they can open.

The  upper air flow is now moving from west to east (called Zonal Flow) and will start cooling us down a bit. It will start to turn more from the northwest swinging that cooler air over the mountains producing more mountain snow to lower levels. A frontal system pushed through so we’ll see colder drier air take over and some well deserved sunshine breaks. Here is a look at a frontal system that will move in between late Sunday and Monday increasing the chance of precipitation as it passes, but drying us out to only slight chances of rain behind it early in the week. Mt. Ashland is open. Hoodoo is open as of today, and Willamette Pass is still waiting for quite a bit more snow.
