An upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape) is pushing to position itself along the coast to send storms our way.  A frontal system is bringing more clouds and precipitation to the Pacific Northwest. A complex frontal system will continue the stream of moisture pouring into Oregon keeping the nearly “Spring Rain” falling.  Spring officially begins with the “Vernal Equinox ” at 4:02 AM next Wednesday March 20th.

It’s time for my new weekly weather quiz question. Here it is. What is “AFOS” and why is it being replaced by “AWIPS?” Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

An upper level ridge of high pressure (Shaded “Arch” shape) is flattening, losing its hump, and is allowing a sub tropical moisture flow from near Hawaii (called the “Pineapple Express”) to move toward us. A warm front moves through and stalls North of us helping to funnel that warm moist air our way. It seems that our chances for rain over the next 48-72 hours are much less than I originally expected. An upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape) along with a cold front will approach the Pacific Northwest Thursday and push through Friday increasing the chances for rain.

No winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is the difference between “weather” and “climate?” Here is the correct answer. The state of the atmosphere with respect to wind, temperature, cloudiness, moisture, pressure, etc. Weather refers to these conditions at a given point in time (e.g., today’s high temperature), whereas Climate refers to the “average” weather conditions for an area over a long period of time (e.g., the average high temperature for today’s date). I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you tomorrow. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Note: It’s not too late to catch up. If you forgot that we went to Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 AM today you can still turn your clocks ahead one hour and be in step with the rest of us. The skies should increasingly cloudy so you might not see that extra daylight much today. It’s also time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors, CO detectors, and any other safety detectors you might so says the fire department.
