Sorry no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. Define the term “PIBAL.” Here is the correct answer. A PIBAL is a Pilot balloon. A small helium-filled meteorological balloon that is tracked as it rises through the atmosphere to determine how wind speed and direction change with altitude. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

A high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows) is off the northwest coast, but an upper level low (Shaded “U” shape with blue arrows) is over southern California. A strong frontal system has slammed into California dumping a lot of rain there. The surface low is still rotating off the California coast spreading rain there and all the way up to Oregon. We’re also getting rain from the north as a frontal system has moved south into Oregon. Another frontal storm (position shown is Tuesday) will move in Monday to Monday night followed by others. Look for an extended wet period.
