Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is “Cryology?”  Here is the correct answer.  Cryology is the science of the physical aspects of snow, ice, hail, and sleet and other forms of water produced by temperatures below Zero degrees Celsius. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs.  Good luck.

An Upper Level High Pressure Ridge tries to take the precipitation chances down and out. The graphics for days 1-3 show a frontal system stalled well to our north. The graphics for days 3-7 show surface high pressure holding on through next Friday when a cold front moves down from the north.

Note: Mt. Ashland had their Midwinter Jam February 2nd, but are they still open? Check their website for details. Hoodoo is open and will be having their Winter Carnival February 10th. Check their website for details. And Willamette Pass reports opening through Sunday for limited low snow operations. Check their website for details.

A survey of 7 Groundhog reports from the US and Canada shows 5 saw their shadows and 2 did not. When you take into account my groundhog the decision is 6 to 2 in favor of six more weeks of winter.  Phil, the nation’s official Groundhog, saw his shadow this morning predicting six more weeks of winter. Spencer Butte Bob, my personal Groundhog in South Eugene also saw his shadow this morning. That too predicts six more weeks of winter, but if our current weather is the winter he predicts that will last that’s as good as an early spring.

Note: Due to the overnight and morning fog most of us in the Eugene/Springfield area missed the Full “Super” Blue Moon (2nd full moon in one month), the Blood Moon with orange to red tint to the moon, and the total Lunar Eclipse. Better luck next time.
