Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is a “Growing Degree Day?” Here is the correct answer. A Growing Degree Day is the number of degrees that the average temperature is above a baseline value. For example, 40 degrees for canning purposes; 45 degree for potatoes; and 50 degrees for sweet corn, snap beans, lima beans, tomatoes, grapes, and field corn. Every degree that the average temperature is above the baseline value becomes a growing degree day. Agricultural related interests use growing degree days to determine planting times. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (Shaded “U” shape with arrows) is controlling our Fall weather pattern. Much cooler air had moved in from the north. The graphics for days 1-3 show a surface frontal system heading our way for today. The warm front will move in first raising afternoon temperatures then the cold front will follow dropping temperatures again tonight. The graphics for days 3-7 more possible disturbances in our future.
Note: Due to the continued fire danger, the outdoor burning season has been delayed until October 13th. The next update on the burning season will be issued at 7 pm October 12th. Remember, burning is always prohibited within the city of Eugene.
