Congratulations to Lee Ann Thomlpson who was the first person to post the correct answer to my weather quiz question this week. Here is the question again. In the Fall the leaves change colors and fall from the trees. What causes the leaves to change colors? Here is Lee Ann’s answer. “As the length of the day changes and the amount of light reduces, the leaves of trees can no longer efficiently use photosynthesis to produce the energy for growth. As the trees stop the process, the green in the leaves disappears leaving behind the fall colors of orange, red, yellow and brown.” This is the full detailed explanation: During the spring and summer the leaves have served as factories where most of the foods necessary for the tree’s growth are manufactured. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. Along with the green pigment are yellow to orange to red pigments as well. Most of the year these colors are masked by great amounts of green coloring. But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange to red colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor. The best time to enjoy the autumn color would be on a clear, dry, and cool day.
I’ll have another weather quiz question or you starting next Monday. Please post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized  weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

The jet stream shows a trough of low pressure ( “U” shaped area) swinging through the Pacific Northwest with another one following behind it. A weak, short lived high pressure ridge (small “Arch” shape moving over us) stopped the rain and brought more sunshine at least temporarily. We’ll see another  frontal system (shown offshore) move in Tuesday followed by another Wednesday and Wednesday night. It’s been a long time coming, but a high pressure ridge (“arch” shape shown at the end of the jet stream movie) will build in late in the week warming us up a bit so it will feel more like Spring. It’s about time. It looks like the rain will still hang around though.
