Sorry, but no winner this week. Here is my weather quiz question one more time. There is an old saying “Cold is the night when the stars shine bright.” What does this saying mean and how does it happen? In the winter, the nights are long in the middle and high latitudes. When the sun is not out, the earth’s surface can continually cool off. Everything emits radiation: the sun, the Earth, the clouds, buildings, and even people. If the stars are shining bright it means there are clear skies. Clear skies allow radiation emitted from the earth’s surface to escape into space because there are no clouds to radiate the energy back down to the surface. Therefore cloudy nights are warmer than clear nights, all else being equal. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments/comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized  weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

An upper level high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape approaching the Pacific Northwest) will bring much warmer and brighter weather for the weekend.  A weak frontal system will be moving in early next week, but it shouldn’t push us all the way back to colder than normal and very wet.
