Sorry but no winner in this week’s weather quiz. Two people did answer it correctly, but they have won before. There is a limit of one win per every 6 months so they are not able to win. Here is the question again. Why can the mercury never drop below -40 degrees F? The answer is that mercury freezes at -40F. Another kind of thermometer, like one with an alcohol-filled tube or other devices like electrical resistance thermometers must be used. Another quiz will start Monday

An upper level High Pressure ridge is still keeping our weather dry through Saturday and at least part of Sunday for the most of us. A series of frontal systems will start to move through by the middle of next week.

For the Central & Southern Willamette Valley: A reminder that when there is fog and the temperature is below freezing freezing fog will occur and a fine mist from the fog producing some slippery spots on the roads. Mostly cloudy with fog tonight  and freezing fog again late low 27-30 (Watch out for possible icy spots on the roadways). Saturday AM clouds and fog with freezing fog  then a mix of clouds & sun, if the fog finally clears, high 42.  Partly cloudy Saturday night with low near 32. We could see some slippery roads where that rain freezes to the cold surfaces. Mostly cloudy Sunday with a slight (20%) chance of rain and freezing rain in the AM then a (40%) chance of afternoon rain high near 45. Sunday night and Monday a slight (20%) of rain low in the low 30s high 45. Monday night through through Friday (New Year’s Day)  a (40%) chance of rain lows 33-36 and highs staying in the low 40s warming to 50 on New Year’s Day with a good (50%) chance of rain.

Mostly cloudy areas of AM fog and freezing fog Saturday morning with patchy fog in the afternoon high 43.  Mostly cloudy at night with patchy fog and a slight (20%) chance of rain low in the mid 30s. Mostly cloudy Sunday with patchy AM fog ( AM snow level 2,500′) and a  slight (20%) chance of showers high 46. Sunday night there will be patchy fog and a slight (20%) chance of showers (snow level 2,000′ late) low near 32. Monday and Monday night there will be early morning and late night fog and a slight (20%) chance of rain high in the low 40s low 33-35. Mostly cloudy Tuesday and Tuesday evening with a (40%) chance of rain , then a (40%) chance of rain and snow showers late high 46 low 34. Mostly cloudy Wednesday through Thursday with late night and early morning rain and snow showers changing to rain showers in the afternoon and evening highs in the mid 40s low in the mid 30s. There will be a good (50%) chance of rain Thursday night and rain will be likely (60%) for Friday, New Year’s Day  low in the mid 30s warming to near 40 Friday high in the mid 40s warming to near 50 Friday.
