Sorry, but no winner this week. Here is the question stated again.  You have probably heard the term “fronts” used to explain the boundaries between cold and warm air masses. Who first coined that term? Here is the answer. The term “front” was coined by a group of Scandinavian meteorologists led by Professor Vilhelm Bjerknes between 1918 and 1923. They put forward the theory that weather activity is concentrated in relatively narrow zones, which form the boundaries between warm and cold air masses. They called the zones “fronts” as an analogy with the battle fronts in World War I.  I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday.  Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized  weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

Advisories: NONE AT THIS TIME.

A  high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape) has migrated to the East allowing an upper level trough of low pressure “U” shape) to build in from the Northwest behind the ridge. That set up a stronger onshore airflow that has cooled us off. A  cold front moved through the Pacific Northwest bringing some clouds and temperatures that are cooler. We’ll warm up a bit between fronts then another frontal system will be pushing through by the end of the weekend.
