Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. Who worked on mathematical models for weather prediction providing the basis for the first successful numerical (computer) forecasting models? He is also credited with predicting the existence of jet streams and developing the main theories describing their behavior. Here is the answer. Carl Gustav Rossby provided the basis for the first computer forecasting models. He also pioneered work on the general circulation of the atmosphere and the meandering long wave patters of westerly air flow in the upper troposphere that are now known as Rossby waves. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized  weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

Advisories: NONE AT THIS TIME.

An upper level trough of low pressure (“U” shape) is moving across the Pacific Northwest and has spread some showers mainly from the Northern third of Oregon North into Washington. Behind it will be a high pressure ridge (“arch” shape) over the weekend that should dry us out for a while at least, but another trough will follow closely behind the ridge trying to bring the clouds back. A new frontal system (position shown is Monday as it has passed through) aims at the Pacific Northwest on Saturday but at this time it looks like it will fall apart before it makes landfall late in the weekend. Will it bring just clouds or will we get more showers? The best chance for showers will be in the Cascades starting Monday.
