We have a winner. That was fast.

Wow! we have a winner already for this week’s weather quiz question. Congratulations to Nicole who was the first person to post the correct answer. Here is the question again. How do hot temperatures effect a typical 727 airliner’s takeoff distance? Here is Nicole’s answer: “Warmer air is less dense than colder air (less molecules) which requires an airplane to have more runway space in which to take off from. The airplane won’t climb as fast or efficiently in warmer conditions and will have a faster approach at landing as well”. The heat makes the air thinner, which reduces the amount of lifting force an aircraft’s wings produce. It then takes a longer distance to get going fast to increase the lift enough for the plane to take off. I’ll have a new weather quiz question for you next week. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

Advisories: NONE AT THIS TIME.

We have been under a blocking high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape covering the Pacific Northwest) that kept us under Easterly hot airflow. The ridge will weaken and start moving Eastward away from us. That means more clouds and cooler temperatures that will be closer to normal. A frontal system will move in and that should break the back of this heat wave with more fronts to follow late in the week and over next weekend.
