Sorry, but no winner this week. Here’s my weekly weather quiz question for the last time this week. This week’s question is: what is the “Heat Index” and why is it important to know what it is? Here is the answer. The heat index (see chart below) is the “feels like”, or apparent, temperature. As relative humidity increases, the air seems warmer than it actually is because the body is less able to cool itself via evaporation of perspiration. As the heat index rises, so do health risks. When the heat index is 90°-105°F, heat exhaustion is possible. When it is above 105°F, it is probable. Heatstroke is possible when the heat index is above 105°F, and very likely when it is 130°F and above. A high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on both lines) has brought sunshine and warmer temperatures today to the Pacific Northwest. An upper air trough of low pressure (“U” shape on orange line) will increase onshore airflow bringing in some more clouds and slight chances for rain beginning by late Sunday. The chance of rain will sneak in late Sunday night and Monday as more frontal systems head our way. For you skywatchers there will be an annular eclipse of the Sun on Sunday evening. Western Oregon is off the path of best viewing, but you should be able to see the moon, as long as the thicker clouds don’t move in, covering most of the Sun with a bigger area of sun visible at the top curve of the moon. There will be a slight chance of sprinkles Sunday afternoon, but that shouldn’t hamper any of the festivities.
