Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. You’ve no doubt heard about the tornadoes that struck in the eastern half of the country recently. Here is my question. Has anyone found a way to stop tornadoes? Please explain your answer. Here is the correct answer. You have to consider that the tornado is part of something bigger – the supercell thunderstorm. Unless you disrupt the supercell thunderstorm itself, you would likely have another tornado, even if you were able to destroy the first. The thunderstorm’s energy is much greater than the tornado. No one has tried to disrupt the tornado because the methods to do so could likely cause even more damage than the tornado. Detonating a hydrogen bomb, for example, to disrupt a tornado would be even more deadly and destructive than the tornado itself. Lesser things (like huge piles of dry ice or smaller conventional weaponry) would be too hard to deploy in the right place fast enough, and would likely not have enough impact to affect the tornado much anyway. I’ll have another weather quiz question for you next Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

A high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on the brown line), which has become a “Omega Block” (shaped like the Greek letter omega) has been moving westward, is controlling our weather. That means it blocks major storm systems from coming our way, but there may be a thunderstorm or two bouncing around the mountains and foothills and then migrating into the valley. An upper level trough of low pressure will slide in by Friday as the ridge weakens and moves a bit to the east.
