Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time.  Define “Aurora Australis.” Here is the correct answer. The aurora australis (or the southern lights) is the southern counterpart and has almost identical features to the aurora borealis which is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind and, on Earth, are directed by the Earth’s magnetic field into the atmosphere. Aurora is classified as diffuse or discrete aurora. Most aurorae occur in a band known as the auroral zone,[1][2] which is typically 3° to 6° in latitudinal extent and at all local times or longitudes.and changes simultaneously with changes in the northern auroral zone[7] and is visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America, New Zealand, and Australia. I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

An upper air trough of low pressure (“U” shape on the orange line) pushed eastward away from us as high pressure (“Arch” shape on the orange line) moved over us and switched the onshore airflow to offshore allowing high temperatures to increase to hot for rest of the weekend. A surface thermal though of low pressure (dashed line) has pushed eastward across Oregon bringing onshore airflow and is responsible for the cooling today away from the triple digit high temperatures.
