Here is my weather quiz question for the last time. There has been heated discussion and much research into “Global Warming.” We’ve heard of the disadvantages of the phenomenon, but what would be the “advantages” of “Global Warming?” Here is the answer.

  • Arctic, Antarctic, Siberia, and other frozen regions of earth may experience more plant growth and milder climates.
  • The next ice age may be prevented from occurring.
  • Northwest Passage through Canada’s formerly-icy north opens up to sea transportation.
  • Less need for energy consumption to warm cold places.
  • Fewer deaths or injuries due to cold weather.
  • Longer growing seasons could mean increased agricultural production in some local areas.
  • Mountains increase in height due to melting glaciers, becoming higher as they rebound against the missing weight of the ice.
  • Boundary disputes between countries over low-lying islands will disappear.

The real question is do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Advisories: A RED FLAG WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM SUNDAY FOR THE EAST SLOPES OF THE NORTH CASCADES OF OREGON INTO THE BLUE MOUNTAINS AND SOUTH THROUGH LA PINE. A RED FLAG WARNING MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EITHER OCCURRING NOW OR WILL SHORTLY. A COMBINATION OF LIGHTNING, GUSTY AND ERRATIC WINDS, AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY WILL CREATE EXPLOSIVE FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL.  TO SEE SPECIFIC DETAILS GO TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AT PORTLAND RED FLAG WARNING PAGE.

A weak trough of low pressure is moving through Oregon bringing more clouds, but no precipitation. A frontal system will slide through between Monday night having almost no effect on our weather. A  high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with blue arrows moving into Western Canada and the Oregon coast) will move onshore bringing more sunshine to the Pacific Northwest by midweek.

**Because weather forecasting is a combination of science, intuition, and timing there can be no absolute guarantees that individual forecasts will be 100% accurate. Nature is in a constant state of flux and sudden unexpected weather events can happen.
