Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is the difference between a “Typhoon” and a “Hurricane”? Here is the correct answer. A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained surface wind (using the U.S. 1-minute average) is 64 kt (74 mph or 119 km/hr) or more. The term hurricane is used for Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclones east of the International Dateline to the Greenwich Meridian. The term typhoon is used for Pacific tropical cyclones north of the Equator west of the International Dateline. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Don’t forget to “Fall Back” to Standard Time at bedtime tonight. The official time change is at 2 AM Sunday, but you don’t have to stay up that late to set your clocks back one hour. The Fire Department suggests that you check the batteries in your smoke detectors and replace them if necessary and the same goes for CO2 detectors and Radon detectors. Make sure they are working properly.

A frontal system is moving through the Pacific Northwest allowing rain tonight. Short-lived high pressure (shaded “Arch” shaped area offshore) will bring out the sunshine Sunday. A trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shaped area with blue arrows in the Gulf of Alaska) will move in behind the ridge sending waves of moisture at us. Another frontal system will push into Oregon Monday bringing another wave of rain.
