Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is the difference between a “Typhoon” and a “Hurricane”? Here is the correct answer. A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained surface wind (using the U.S. 1-minute average) is 64 kt (74 mph or 119 km/hr) or more. The term hurricane is used for Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclones east of the International Dateline to the Greenwich Meridian. The term typhoon is used for Pacific tropical cyclones north of the Equator west of the International Dateline. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Short-lived high pressure (shaded “Arch” shaped area offshore) brought out the sunshine today and should hold off more wet weather until midweek. A trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shaped area with blue arrows in the Gulf of Alaska) will move in behind the ridge sending waves of moisture at us. A warm front (Red line with semi-circles on it) has already moved by warming us up more than I expected. The cold front will move in behind it and fall apart. A frontal system will push into Oregon Wednesday with more behind it bringing increasing waves of rain.
