Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is a “theodolite?” Here is Michael’s correct answer. “Theodolite? It’s the wee telescope (like a surveyors’ transit) used to measure azimuth and elevation of your Pibal (pilot/weather balloon) for tracking it after release.” And here is the official National Weather Service definition. Theodolite: An instrument used in surveying to measure horizontal and vertical angles with a small telescope that can move in the horizontal and vertical planes. It used to track the movements of either a ceiling balloon or a radiosonde. The only difference is in terminology. Good going Michael. I’ll have a new wkly weather quiz question starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

An upper level high pressure ridge (shaded “Arch” shape) has taken over drying us out for the rest of the week into the weekend. It’s just the beginning of May, but the weather will feel more like June into the weekend. As the high pressure moves eastward the airflow over us will be from the East and that will help heat us up to near record levels.
