No winner this week. Here is my new weekly weather quiz question one more time. What is a “Sun Dog?” Here is the correct answer. The scientific name for sun dogs is Parhelion. Either of two colored luminous spots that appear at roughly 22 degrees on both sides of the sun at the same elevation. They are caused by the refraction of sunlight passing through ice crystals. They are most commonly seen during winter in the middle latitudes and are exclusively associated with cirriform clouds. They are also known as mock suns. I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

A weak upper level high (Small “Arch” shape in blue arrows) has cleared us up and dried us out for the weekend as another low (“U” shape) moves in behind it off the Washington and Oregon coasts to return the clouds. A frontal system (position shown is Monday) will return the chance of rain.

The Grass Pollen Count has dropped and is listed as Moderate at 14 according to Oregon Allergy Associates. It has dropped because of the cooler air and rain.
