Here is my new weekly weather quiz question. What or where is “Pangea?” Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Advisories: There is a Blue-Green Algae warning that continues for Dexter Reservoir and Dorena Reservoir has just been added to the list. Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins, state public health officials said. The algae levels are likely associated with dangerous cyanotoxin concentrations in the water that can be harmful to humans and animals. Swallowing or inhaling water droplets, as well as skin contact with water, should be avoided according to the authorities.

An upper level low (“U” shape with blue arrows) has moved to the south and is going to move slowly to the North and East later in the week. The airflow continues to bring a chance of thunderstorms over the mountains and spread smoke from existing wildfires. The southerly airflow for the next couple of days will mean that smoke from those wildfires will remain in the Willamette Valley. The weather for the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City that begins today and continues through Sunday will be partly cloudy in the 80s with a slight chance of a thunderstorm with patchy smoke hanging around. I’ll keep you updated on that as we get closer to the weekend.

The Perseid meteor shower is in progress. The maximum number of “shooting stars” from the comet Swift-Tuttle will be visible after midnight Sunday through Tuesday. There could be as many as 50 sighted per hour as they move from the NE quadrant of the sky. For best viewing go to where there are no city lights to brighten the sky.
