Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is an “Urban Heat Island?” Here is the correct answer. An “Urban Heat Island” is the increased air temperatures in urban areas in contrast to cooler surrounding rural areas. It is caused by the solar radiation in the city being reflected back to the streets from the glass and concrete buildings and being held by the pavement.  I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Advisories:

A Blue-Green Algae warning continues for Dexter Reservoir, Dorena Reservoir, and Fern Ridge Reservoir, and farther away at Devils Lake. Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins, state public health officials said. The algae levels are likely associated with dangerous cyanotoxin concentrations in the water that can be harmful to humans and animals. Swallowing or inhaling water droplets, as well as skin contact with water, should be avoided according to the authorities.

An upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape offshore) is moving toward the Oregon coast to replace the high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape) that gave us way above normal temperatures. That trough will keep us in a wet weather pattern for most of this week. A cold front will be approaching the Oregon coast by the end of the week. Autumn begins at 1:44 PM next Sunday September 22nd, so Summer is nearly over.
