Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is “Upwelling?” Here is the correct answer. Upwelling in ocean dynamics is the upward motion of sub-surface water toward the surface of the ocean. This is often a source of cold, nutrient-rich water. Strong upwelling occurs along the equator where easterly winds are present. Upwelling also can occur along coastlines, and is important to fisheries and birds in California and Peru. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

An upper level low (Shaded “U” shape in blue arrows) is still in control of our weather. Should be dry but cooler than normal for the Labor Day Holiday itself with shower chances returning Monday night. We’re stuck between that low and a high pressure ridge over the Pacific Ocean which means not much change in the current weather pattern. A frontal system moves through Oregon Thursday. There will be a slight break Friday and early Saturday, but more clouds and the chance of showers returns for the rest of the weekend. Here’s another frontal system sliding through the Pacific Northwest next Sunday.

Advisories:
- A FREEZE WARNING IS IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM UNTIL 8 AM MONDAY FOR THE KLAMATH BASIN NORTHERN AND EASTERN KLAMATH COUNTY, AND WESTERN, CENTRAL AND EASTERN LAKE COUNTY.
- A FROST ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM UNTIL 8 AM MONDAY FOR THE KLAMATH BASIN NORTHERN AND EASTERN KLAMATH COUNTY, AND WESTERN, CENTRAL AND EASTERN LAKE COUNTY.
- A health advisory is in effect for ocean water contact at Neskowin Beach located in Tillamook County due to higher than normal levels of fecal bacteria. Contact with the water can result in diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses.Direct contact with the water should be avoided in this area until the advisory is lifted, especially by children and the elderly who may be more vulnerable to waterborne bacteria. Visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks, pools of water on the beach, or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean.
- A health advisory remains in effect for water contact at Nye Beach located in Lincoln County due to higher than normal levels of fecal bacteria.
- A health advisory remains in effect for Agency Lake. Agency Lake is located just north of Upper Klamath Lake near Klamath Falls along Highway 97 in Klamath County. Water monitoring on the lake has confirmed the presence of high levels of blue-green algae and associated toxins that can be harmful to people and animals. Swallowing water while swimming or inhaling water droplets as a result of high-speed water activities, such as water skiing and power boating, should be avoided in areas where blooms are identified. Although toxins are not absorbed through the skin, contact with cells from a bloom can cause skin irritation and a red, puffy rash in individuals with skin sensitivities, or those who develop rashes easily.
- A Blue-Green Algae health advisory remains in effect for Howard Bay (sometimes called Howards Bay or Howard’s Bay) in Upper Klamath Lake ONLY. People should avoid swallowing water while swimming or inhaling water droplets as a result of high-speed water activities, such as water skiing or power boating, in areas where blooms are identified. Although toxins are not absorbed through the skin, people who have skin sensitivities may experience a puffy, red rash at the affected area.
