Football Forecast for Thursday:

Ducks vs UCLA at Autzen Stadium: Kickoff 6PM Partly cloudy 60 Wind: light

Should be dry for the game with slowly increasing clouds and the chance of rain beginning late at night. Make sure you dress in layers because the temperature will be dropping as the game progresses. You might want to make sure you are prepared for a sprinkle just in case the storm decides to move in a little sooner. It’s Oregon after all.

We have a winner! Congratulations to Pauline Hauder. She is this week’s weather quiz winner. She was the first person to post the correct answer for the meaning of G.O.E.S in that category of weather satellites. Here is the weather quiz question I asked. The United States launched its first weather (TIROS) satellite on April 1, 1960. Now we have many of them. One group of weather satellites is designated as G.O.E.S. What do the letters stand for? Pauline’s answer was Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite. They are placed in orbit above the Equator at an altitude of 22,300 feet so that they match the speed of the rotation of the earth. That keeps the satellite positioned so it looks down at the same area of the earth all of the time. I’ll have another question for you starting next Monday. There has been some confusion as to where you should post the answer. Please post your answer as a comment after the forecasts on this page. Just scroll down past the forecasts and you’ll see where you can add a comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs.

An upper level upper level High Pressure ridge (“Arch” shaped area) will keep us dry for another day, but it will start to move eastward away from us Thursday. An upper level trough of low pressure (the “U” shaped  area over the Gulf of Alaska) will start changing our weather and help send moisture ahead of a series of disturbances that will be approaching the coast overnight Thursday through early next week.
