Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is a “Derecho?” Here is the correct answer. A Derecho (Pronounced day-RAY-cho) is a widespread and usually fast-moving windstorm associated with convection. Derechos include any family of downburst clusters produced by an extratropical MCS (Mesoscale Convective System), and can produce damaging straight-line winds over areas hundreds of miles long and more than 100 miles across. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

Another Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (Shaded “U” shape with arrows) is slowly moving eastward. Short-lived Upper High Pressure Ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with arrows) will dry us and warm us up a bit until the next Upper Level Low Pressure Trough moves in. The graphics for days 1-3 show the lull in disturbances early next week. The graphics for days 3-7 show what looks to be a strong storm system headed toward the Pacific Northwest late Wednesday through Thursday, then the next frontal system will be approaching the Pacific Northwest Coast by a week from Monday.
Note: It looks like Willamette Pass Ski is closed for the season due to a lack of snow, but Hoodoo is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 AM- 9 PM. Mt. Ashland is open and report all lifts are operating. They will also be open 9 AM until 4 pm March 24th through April 1st for Spring break. Check their websites for details on days of operation and ski conditions.
Note: Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 AM Sunday March 11th so remember to “Spring Forward!” at bedtime Saturday night by turning your clocks ahead one hour. The authorities also suggest that you check the batteries in your smoke alarms, CO2 detectors, and Radon detectors and replace them if necessary.
