The upper air flow (yellow jet stream and dark colors for winds) shows a  trough of low pressure a (“U” shape offshore) sliding Eastward into the coast as a frontal system moves slowly through the Pacific Northwest. Notice that the jet stream airflow moves so that it brings the colder air from the north and northwest toward the middle and end of the week into New Years Day.
