The upper air flow (yellow jet stream and dark colors for winds) shows a  trough of low pressure a (“U” shape offshore) sliding Eastward into the coast as a frontal system moved slowly through the Pacific Northwest with colder air behind it. Notice that the jet stream airflow moves so that it brings the colder air in from the north and northwest into New Years Day.
