Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is  “Effective Terrestrial Radiation?” Here is the correct answer. Effective Terrestrial Radiation is the difference between upwelling infrared or terrestrial radiation emitted from the earth and the downwelling infrared radiation from the atmosphere  I’ll have a new weekly weather qui question for you starting Monday. The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

An Upper Level High Pressure Ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape with arrows) is strengthening and will bring more dry weather with sunshine. We are still dryer than normal and below where we were at this time last year. We need rain, but the most we’ll see for the next week or so will be a drop-in-the-bucket compared to what we need. This could be a very bad fire season approaching. The graphics for days 1-3 show the frontal system that moves in from the northwest Sunday into Monday. An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (Shaded “U” shape with arrows) takes over early in the week for cooler temperatures but still dry. The graphics for days 3-7 show the frontal system moving between Wednesday and Thursday. There will be another front pushing through the Pacific Northwest next Saturday.

ADVISORIES:

HEALTH ADVISORIES:

  • A PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR DETROIT LAKE, LOCATED 46 MILES SE OF SALEM. THE LAKE SPANS BOTH LINN AND MARION COUNTIES. WATER MONITORING HAS CONFIRMED THE PRESENCE OF BLUE-GREEN ALGAE AND THE TOXINS THEY PRODUCE IN DETROIT LAKE. PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID SWALLOWING WATER, OR INHALING WATER DROPLETS AS A RESULT OF HIGH-SPEED WATER ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WATER SKIING OR POWER BOATING, IN AREAS WHERE BLOOMS ARE IDENTIFIED. ALSO KEEP PETS AWAY FROM THE WATER.
  • A PERMANENT HEALTH ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER BAR. POOLS IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP BLUE-GREEN ALGAE (CYANOBACTERIAL) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED ALONG SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE  RIVER.
