Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is a “Growing Degree Day?” Here is the correct answer. A Growing Degree Day is the number of degrees that the average temperature is above a baseline value. For example, 40 degrees for canning purposes; 45 degree for potatoes; and 50 degrees for sweet corn, snap beans, lima beans, tomatoes, grapes, and field corn. Every degree that the average temperature is above the baseline value becomes a growing degree day. Agricultural related interests use growing degree days to determine planting times. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. The first person to post the correct answer as a comment on this page will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

Note: Due to the continued fire danger, the outdoor burning season has been delayed until October 13th. The next update on the burning season will be issued at 7 pm October 12th. Remember, burning is always prohibited within the city of Eugene.
